There is no margin for error in flow cytometry

The quality of the analytical measurement data depends entirely on the stability of this liquid flow. Fluctuations in the flow rate directly affect the exact position of the cell in the measurement zone and compromise repeatability. For high-resolution cell analysis, a stable, low-pulsation sheath flow of 1 to 10 ml/min, low dead volumes and extremely precise fluid handling are therefore of crucial importance.

The development of high-quality flow cytometers places stringent and specific demands on the integrated fluidic system. This applies both to the supply of the sheath fluid and to the pumping of the cell and particle suspensions themselves.

Key requirements for the fluid system:

  • Sstable sheath flow (1 to 10 ml/min): Constant flow conditions for reproducible measurement results, even over long cycle periods.
  • Pulsation-free dosing: Prevents turbulence and fluctuations in the microfluidic channels.
  • Gentle handling of samples: Low shear forces protect vulnerable cells and particles from damage.
  • Minimum dead volume: Enables efficient medium changes and reduces the consumption of expensive reagents.
  • Compact integration: Provides a solution for integration into compact OEM analytical instruments.
  • Chemical resistance: Suitable for regular cleaning and chemical sterilisation procedures.

A stable fluidic process makes a direct contribution to the overall measurement quality and data reliability in high-resolution cell analysis.

Precise dosing, flawless data

As a specialist in precise liquid dosing, Suurmond offers the ideal solution with the micro-gear pumps from HNPM’s low-pressure range (e.g. types mzr-2521 and mzr-2921). These pumps have been specifically designed for the demanding operating conditions of flow cytometry instruments.

Extremely gentle & low-pulsation dosing with the mzr pump series:

  • Unrivalled flow stability: The extremely low-pulsation pump drive ensures uniform flow conditions in microfluidic channels.
  • Maintenance of cell integrity: The low-shear principle ensures extremely gentle treatment of sensitive cell and particle suspensions.
  • Simple OEM Integration: Thanks to their compact size and light weight, you can easily integrate the mzr pumps into your analytical equipment.
  • Low-maintenance & chemical-resistant: Manufactured from high-quality, chemically resistant materials that can withstand intensive CIP/SIP and sterilisation regimes.
  • High instrument availability: Provides a reliable and sustainable solution that minimises downtime in laboratory environments.

With Suurmond, you are choosing an OEM partner who works with you to optimise your fluidic processes, ensuring high-quality and reproducible analysis results.

FAQ on pumps for flow cytometry

The quality of the analytical measurement data depends directly on the stability of the sheath flow. Fluctuations in the flow rate alter the exact position of the cell within the optical detection zone, which compromises the repeatability and accuracy of the measurements.

High-resolution cell analysis requires a stable, low-pulsation sheath flow of 1 to 10 ml/min.

The HNPM micro-gear pumps operate with low shear forces. This gentle handling of fluids prevents damage to sensitive cells and particle suspensions during pumping.

The low-pressure micro-gear pumps in the HNPM series — specifically the mzr-2521 and mzr-2921 — have been specially designed for the demanding operating conditions of flow cytometry instruments.

Yes. Thanks to their compact size, low weight and minimal dead volume, you can easily integrate the pumps into compact OEM analytical instruments. A built-in version (manifold assembly M2.1) is also available.

The mzr pumps are made from high-quality, chemically resistant materials. This makes them capable of withstanding regular cleaning and chemical sterilisation procedures (such as CIP/SIP regimes).

A minimal dead volume enables a quick and efficient medium change. This significantly reduces the consumption of costly reagents and samples.

For this reason, the mzr-2521 and mzr-2921 are particularly well suited to flow cytometry.

The pumps can be combined with a control system, such as the mzr-Touch Control or the S-ND controller. This allows for simple control via a potentiometer or via a touch screen (control unit).

Thanks to their low-maintenance design and chemical resistance, the pumps offer high instrument availability. This minimises unwanted downtime in laboratory environments.
